Design Studio 4

PROJECT 1: FURNITURE FOR AN ELDERLY

In this project, we were required to design a furniture which is intended for a specific user based on an in-depth study of the user's need. This is to develop awareness of environmental sustainability in a design and our ability as a student to meet the imperative and inter-related social needs. By working in a group of 2, we were to visit an elderly care centre or old folks home to interview an elderly and design the furniture based on the requirements for him/her.

Throughout this project, I've learned to identify and analyze environmental qualities and contextual needs of a site and apply ideas of environmental sustainability which suits the user needs in terms of functionality and experience.

PROJECT 2: CENTRE FOR THE ELDERLY

This project is divided into 2 parts. The first part, we were required to do site analysis with a group where the site is located in a suburban area in PJS 7 not far from our campus.

Then, coming to an indivisual project, we were to design an elderly care centre where physiological and socilogical principles should be observed and planned to take in consideration in designing for an elderly home centre. Thus, it is always challenging in designing such building where ordinary design criteria do not always apply to it.

Throughout this project, I have learned that designing an elderly care centre is not as easy task. From the overall site integration to internal small detials like bedroom requirements are needed to tak in consideration for a better user experience and user needs for an elderly. I am also very grateful with the help of my tutor guiding me throughout every tutorial session and also giving me advice on refining ever small details.
